“The more powerful AI grows, the more it needs to have proper regulation. In fact AI has been left unregulated up till now, but now is the time that AI is starting to show the signs of being powerful enough that a proper ethical and legal framework can be put into place. AI is now here to stay.

"As AI capabilities increase there are limited applications where it can help the decision making process. For example, if you have a small claim in court it can help in making that decision.

"There were a number of attempts in the past to use AI in a practical way but unfortunately while the ideas were good the practical implementation wasn’t fast enough or good enough for everyday use. What we’re doing is to looking at all the different theoretical approaches and making practical implications of them.

"For example if you’ve used a digital assistant, every time you speak your speech is being sent to a data centre somewhere where it is transcribed and matched and the result sent back. It would be much better if the device could do that in your home without privacy issues, getting it directly to you. I think we’re going to see a lot of advances quite soon."
