The casino industry has generated revenue amounting to over Rs1277.29 crore to the State's coffer since 2012, according to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
Goa is home to a number of well known floating casinos, and it is a state known for its electric scene and bustling nightlife. The offshore casinos are moored in the Mandovi River while land-based casinos can be found in high end hotels and beaches.
However, there is some uncertainty regarding the future of Goa and its nightlife as transport minister, Mauvin Godinho, has called for the relocation of the offshore casinos in a bid to ease Panaji's traffic congestion and pollution issue.
Furthermore, Pramod Sawant, when answering questions put forward by BJP MLA Atanasio Monserrate, Independent MLAs Rohan Khaunte and Prasad Gaonkar, stated that the draft banning Goans from casinos is currently under consideration from the government.
An amendment to the Goa Gambling Act means that only foreigners will be able to enter casinos.
Sawant has also said that the offshore casinos will be moved but ruled out any proposal to relocate them away from the River Mandovi.
