The first draw will take place when the 70% threshold is reached (regarding younger citizens as well), with the percentage closing in on 69% on Sunday. This makes the Alberta vaccination rate relatively high in international comparison.
The scheme is not a Canadian invention, however. Many regions in which there are enough doses, but not enough willingness, have seen give-aways and lottery schemes before, including large portions of the US and China, as reported by Gambling Insider.
Despite the good intentions, there are sceptics towards such programmes. Behavioural economist Robert Oxoby from the University of Calgary believes the incentives do not have the power to change preferences and have limited impact.
Ultimately, the implementation of incentives has correlated with slight increases in vaccination rates, with certain limits varying regionally.
